Alzheimer’s Association Leads Efforts to Increase Research Funding

A Long Island, NY-based construction executive, Arthur Godsell serves as president of Godsell Construction Corporation, a family-owned company that provides various construction services throughout New York. Outside of his professional activities, Arthur Godsell gives back to the community by supporting various organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Association.

As one of the leading organizations advancing Alzheimer’s research, the Alzheimer’s Association advocates at all levels of government to increase funding for research to improve care, treatment, and prevention of the disease and other forms of dementia. Recently, the organization and its advocacy affiliate, the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM), successfully led efforts to increase Alzheimer’s research funding at the National Institutes of Health.

The advocacy efforts resulted in the approval of a $289 million funding increase for fiscal year 2022. Congress approved the omnibus spending bill in March 2022 and included $25 million to fund and implement the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s Act, which was signed into law in 2018 to strengthen public health infrastructure supporting Alzheimer’s care.

Through the work of the Alzheimer’s Association and other groups, funding for Alzheimer’s research and support has increased significantly in the last 5 years. When added to current National Institutes of Health spending in the area, the recently approved funding will bring the total federal investment in Alzheimer’s and dementia research to $3.5 billion.
